Biography

Philip Agop Philip, MD, PhD, FRCP, serves as the Kathryn Cramer, MD, Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and is leader of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Multidisciplinary Team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He also serves as professor of oncology and pharmacology at Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU SOM), also in Detroit. Additionally, he is vice president for medical affairs at Karmanos.

Dr Philip earned his medical degree at the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in Iraq. He earned his PhD in clinical pharmacology and pharmacogenetics at the University of London Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London, England. Dr Philip completed a residency at the University of Baghdad. He completed a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Oxford in London, England, and at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, United States. He is board certified in medical oncology in the United States and he is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London. He joined Karmanos in 1995.

Dr Philip is a member of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s Scientific Advisory Board. He also chairs the pancreatic cancer committee at the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and is a member of the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). His major research interests are in the development of new therapies for gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine cancers with a special focus on pancreatic cancer. He has been the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancers.

A frequent national and international lecturer, Dr Philip has authored more than 200 manuscripts, review articles, and editorials, and has co-edited a book on pancreatic cancer. His lecture topics include pancreatic and biliary cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, and gastroesophageal cancer.
