Detroit Central High School tours Pharmacology Department

On Thursday, April 24, the Department of Pharmacology welcomed Detroit Central High School students to a behind-the-scenes look at Wayne State School of Medicine laboratories. The tour highlighted biomedical research careers and encouraged students to continue their interest and education in STEM.

The second year of a collaboration between Student Organization EmpowerSci and DC High School teacher Hans Sowder, the event allowed 10 Advanced Placement Biology high school students to learn about the history of the Pharmacology program. The Chair of the Pharmacology Department, Dr. Sokol Todi, guided the high school students through "crash course" lab rotations. The lab rotations helped students learn about the science conducted within 4 labs and allowed students to observe a technique perfomed by each.

Afterward, students sat down with undergraduate researchers; medical students; graduate students; and Cancer Research, Training, and Education Coordination (CRTEC) members from Wayne State University to discuss the importance of science and to learn about research opportunities and educational paths.
